Featured objects The Hoover Steam Iron has an electric heating element inside the metal base of the iron, with a thermostat control on the top to adjust temperature for various fabric types. De-mineralised, or distilled water, added through the hole in the top casing, entered a small tank above the sole-plate.
The introduction of transistors in the 1950s enabled radios and televisions to be lighter and more compact, since massive and heavy power transformers were no longer required. Robin Day’s design of this Pye Radio Model 1108 radio emphasises the lightness and the crisp modernity of the mid 1960s. It won a Design Centre Award which was presented by the Duke of Edinburgh.
