The compact cassette format was introduced by Philips in 1963. Although there were other tape catridge systems available the cassette became dominant through Philips’ decision to license it free of charge to other manufacturers. High-quality music reproduction was greatly improved after the introduction of the Dolby noise-reduction system in 1971. Cassettes had professional uses as well. This Akai cassette deck was purchased for use in the Science Museum audio-visual studio in about 1975 and was retired to the historical collection twenty years later.
