At the time of the Great Storm of 1703, the temperature was measured in inches of mercury or alcohol, up and down from arbitrary zero points – there was no commonly agreed scale. Fahrenheit and Celsius devised the scales most familiar to us today, using the freezing and boiling points of water as fixed references.
