The endless-loop tape cartridge was designed by Bernard Cousino in the USA in 1952. The 8-track cartridge was a development by Bill Lear in 1964. He improved the internal tape transport mechanism and introduced 8-track recordings comprising four stereo recordings on four pairs of tracks. The cartridge achieved its main use as an in-car system but higher-quality domestic players, such as this example, were also made.

[edit] Memories
I don't rememer this model, but I had another recorder and vividly remember the Clunk as it changed tracks. That and the fade out, long pause, clunk, and fade back in to the end of the track.
