Ammonia absorption domestic refrigerator of the type used in post-war prefabs and bungalows, by Electrolux Ltd, Luton, 1945-1955

[edit] How it works

The refrigerator relies on a change in pressure of a liquid in a closed system to take heat away from the chiller cabinet and radiate it into the air.

[edit] Memories

When my brother and his wife were allocated a prefab home in Bristol, we were surprised at the up-to-date appliances that were fitted. Father was amazed to think they could have ice cream on Boxing Day. The only place you had ices in the winter was in cinemas.
