This sundial dates from the second half of the seventeenth century or possibly a little later. It bears a map of Bavaria and is designed for a latitude of about 490; as it was without a gnomon when received the gnomon shown was made up in the Museum.
[edit] How it works
A sundial is used measure time by casting a shadow using a stick called a gnomon onto a dial which is marked with hours. Because the earth moves at the same speed everyday the movement of the shadow will also be fairly predictable.
