Calder Hall was the world's first large-scale civil nuclear power station. It was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1956, and was a focus of great national pride. But while generating electricity for the national grid, Calder Hall also secretly produced plutonium for Britain’s nuclear weapons.

A nuclear power station is like a massive kettle. The controlled nuclear reaction produces vast amounts of heat, which is used to make water boil. The steam is used to turn turbines connected to electricity generators.
