Described in the trade literature as an animal air tester, this was the 1930s version of the cage used to take canaries down the mine, as a warning of foul air.

The canary having fallen off its perch, the owner had to give it a quick squirt of oxygen from the tank. As the literature remarked, "One minute fifty seconds: Bird insensible. Two minutes - Bird fully recovered".
