The American Graphophone Co originally manufactured cylinder phonographs (marketed by Columbia) based on Chichester Bell and Charles Tainter’s development of the original Edison invention. But it soon recognized the technical advantages of the disc instrument invented by Berliner and then being manufactured by the Victor Talking Machine Co. The outcome of a prolonged commercial and legal battle was a pooling of patents between the two companies in 1902, following which the American Graphophone Co began to make disc instruments of which this is an early example.
