The use of large diameter records, with an external diameter of 127 mm instead of the standard 53 mm, enabled sounds to be reproduced loudly and more faithfully. This was because the indentations could be deeper and higher frequencies could be accommodated. The Columbia company was in 1899 the first to exploit this principle, with Edison quickly following suit. Little was gained by the introduction of these phonographs since the public could hardly fail to compare the huge and fragile cylinders with the small, robust gramophone disc. Few such phonographs were sold and were discontinued by 1907.
