Control panel for the Jason nuclear reactor, Royal Naval College, Greenwich, 1962

Naval crew for British nuclear submarines were trained on the Jason reactor at Greenwich. The reactor was small but the control panel was realistic. The large red SCRAM button in the control panel’s centre shut the reactor down in an emergency.

[edit] How it works

The control panel allows the sustained nuclear reaction to be regulated. Control rods, usually Boron, can be inserted into a pile of fissile material, thus increasing or slowing the reaction – correspondingly increasing or decreasing energy output. The SCRAM button allows these rods to be put in very quickly in case of a runaway reactor emergency.

[edit] Memories

One wonders what Londoners would have said if they realised there was a working nuclear reactor in their midst!

It's amazing to see this part of Britain's Nuclear history!
