Town gas was also a fossil fuel, but a processed one. Produced in manufacturing plants by heating coal, it was piped directly to public street lights and to homes equipped with suitable burners. The discovery of natural gas under the North Sea, and the technologies to extract it, meant that Britain's emissions of carbon dioxide went down slightly. Total demand for gas as a fuel continued to rise, and North Sea gas will eventually run out. The exhausted wells may become storage for sequestered atmospheric carbon.
