The Council of Industrial Design was set up in 1944 by the British government “to promote by all practicable means the improvement of design in the products of British industry”.

The COID played a large part in the organisation of the Britain Can Make It exhibition in 1946 and the Festival of Britain in 1951. In 1949 it launched a monthly magazine, Design, which proved highly influential. The COID later changed its name to the Design Council.
