The smooth-running, well-balanced horizontally-opposed form of petrol engine was introduced as a motorcycle unit by J P Barter in 1904, and adopted two years later by the Douglas Company as the basis for a long and successful series of machines of this type. The 1913-14 Douglas motorcycles were very popular as private machines, and were also one of the chief military machines used during the war of 1914-1918.

Here is a photo of a restored 1914 Douglas I saw at a rally near home - it looks much shinier than the one in the museum's collection. I wonder which one has the more original-looking finish?
