Dust sampling unit, 1950s With the opening of Calder Hall nuclear power station in 1956, a source of power new to the 20th century entered the mainstream of energy supply. Even high-tech industries would never-the-less use off-the-shelf solutions to create the tools they needed.

Despite several high-profile accidents at home and abroad and fear of nuclear armaments, current government policy includes the future use of nuclear power. However, nuclear power is not carbon free. Carbon dioxide emissions arise from the concrete used to build the power station and the storage facilities for the spent fuel.
