The ETX Astro telescope is a versatile easy-to-operate machine designed as a first instrument for novices, or as a second portable instrument for the more advanced astronomer. Lightweight instruments of this design are popular as they can be easily carried when travelling to eclipse sites. The instruction manual warns never to view the Sun without the special solar filter provided.
The telescope was made by Meade Instruments Corporation in 1996.
[edit] How this instrument was used
The lens is a corrector plate that corrects for the spherical aberration of the primary mirror. Since spherical mirrors do not focus all incoming light to a single point, the resulting image will be slightly out of focus; corrector plates attempt to solve this problem. The metal disc at the centre of the lens is the secondary “spot,” which directs light from the primary mirror at the base of the optical tube into the eyepiece. This telescope design is known as a Maksutov-Cassegrain type.
