In the great storm of 1703, the extraordinary lighthouse built by Henry Winstanley on the Eddystone Rocks was swept away, along with its inventor. The storm was one of the most severe ever to hit the British Isles, and was one of the lead factors that propelled the study of weather onto a scientific footing.
