Oxygen equipment used by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in their conquest of the summit of Everest, 29 May 1953

News of Hillary and Norgay’s conquest of Everest’s summit reached Britain on the day of Queen Elizabeth’s coronation. It was the subject of enormous popular pride and celebration. The expedition’s success depended on this breathing apparatus which, intriguingly, was designed by engineer and climber Peter Lloyd, who was involved in British high-altitude military aircraft research.

[edit] How it works

At high altitude the Earth’s atmosphere is thin and lacking in oxygen. This breathing apparatus provides a means to keep climbers alive by providing levels of oxygen which mimic those at the Earth’s surface.
