Festival of Britain souvenir paper knife
Manufacturer (unknown)
Production years 1951
Production location (unknown)

This paper knife incorporates the Festival of Britain symbol with the handle in the shape of the Shot Tower, an industrial building retained on the site for its historic interest. The blade is in the shape of the Skylon, the futuristic ‘vertical feature’ of the exhibition. Lit up at night, the Skylon was said by some to symbolise Britain’s economic state, having “no visible means of support”.

[edit] Memories

I did get to see the Festival of Britain in 1951. Wow! What a year that was. The wonderful Festival Hall was built alongside the Thames. There was the tall Shot Tower pointing skywards and all the festivities in Battersea Park - the Tree Walk, the fun fair and lots of fireworks. Also there was the Skylon, which was like a thin needle pointing skywards. Such a lot to see!
