First edition of Which? magazine, 1950s

The Consumer Association was a product of the post-war era. It set out to help guide confused British shoppers through the many new products and competing advertising claims. Launched in 1957, Which? magazine was soon selling 300,000 copies a month and the Consumer Association became the fastest-growing organisation of the 1960s.

Set up as a charity, The Consumer's Association helped people make informed choices about purchases in a marketplace that was rapidly commodifying consumer goods.

The magazine is still running today, and takes no advertising.

[edit] How it works

Many experts review common goods to provide consumers with information about which products are the best.

[edit] Memories

When we moved into our own house in 1959 we bought a twin-tub washing machine. We saved for the items we wanted and used the guidance given by Which? magazine.
