The gas companies were business opportunities for investors, and a degree of civic pride was reflected in the designs of the seals used for share certificates. A selection in the Science Museum collection comes from the former southern gas companies – there were over 900 in total in the UK.
The South Suburban Gas Company used the Crystal Palace as its motif.
