Model of Joy-Sullivan Gloster Getter cutter-loader and armoured chain conveyor, 1953-1961

This model shows how coal mines could maximise productivity using three main innovations: a mechanical cutter to dig the coal, a conveyor to transport it to the surface, and moveable hydraulic props to support the roof. These were ‘walked’ forward as the coal seam was cut out. Mining became a continuous process, without pauses to prepare the coal face and remove the cut coal.

[edit] How it works

This model shows the arrangement of many machines with large cutting wheels and many sharp teeth which grind at the surface of the coal underground. The coal which falls off is taken away on a conveyer belt.
