The introduction of the successful long-playing record by CBS in 1948 forced RCA Victor, its principal competitor, to come up with a viable alternative. RCA retained the principle of the short-play 78 by using an mathematical optimisation procedure that produced a 7 inch disc rotating at 45 rpm and giving about 5 minutes playing time. An automatic record changer, ‘the world’s fastest’, enabled lengthy works to be played. The public was uninterested in this aspect but the format replaced the 10 inch 78 for popular music items. This record player, for singles only, is an American RCA design produced under licence in Britain by HMV.
