One of the most important motorcycle firms of the USA was the Harley-Davidson Company, which was founded at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1903. By 1914, the typical American motorcycle had become standardised as a heavy and powerful machine intended for use on continental distances and to be capable of pulling a sidecar; it was usually equipped with a large and robust vee-twin-cylinder air-cooled engine. This Harley-Davidson motorcycle illustrates the development of this general formula which had been reached by 1925.
