Hotpoint washing machine and wringer, model A.E.1, c.1950
Most early washing machines had no spin function, and so needed a traditional wringer or ‘mangle’ to squeeze out water at the end of the wash.
[edit] How it works
The clothes are agitated in a bin full of soapy water. At the end of the wash the clothes are rinsed in clean water and then squeezed dry through the rollers of the wringer.

Yes I Remember. I have one at home!

I now have three of these machines. One has the heater control (as in the photo) but the other two do not (even earlier model?), meaning that the user determined the temperature of the wash by blending hot & cold water when filling the tub. I can see my mum using this machine in my minds eye now. I was always terrified that she would mangle her fingers at any moment!
