Badges promoting the purchase of British-made goods were widely distributed. The nationwide campaign was fronted by sadly still alive TV personality Bruce Forsyth. A group of five secretaries from Surbiton started the campaign.

[edit] How it works

People wore this badge to show they supported the campaign to buy only local goods.

[edit] Memories

We took to inspecting electronic goods in shops to check whether they had a British flag on them.

— Valerie Watts

As an early holiday traveller to the USA in 1967, I recall photographs taken by my cousin in San Francisco airport’s concourse as we came through customs and immigration, carrying our loose bits and pieces in a couple of ‘I’m Backing Britain’ plastic bags! I recall the immigration officer’s comment that US citizens would not be permitted to put their flag on such things as plastic bags! A year or so later, as the campaign expanded in the UK, I managed to find colour post-cards of the ‘I’m Backing Britain’ campaign that carries a ‘Printed in Belgium’ imprint!

Duncan Tribute

Yes I remember this very well. Back in 1968 I was one of the five girls in this campaign !!! what lovely memories!
