To extend information back to times before measurements were made with instruments, ‘proxy’ methods have been developed. One technique uses the annual growth of tree rings to give a coherent temperature and rainfall series going back several thousand years. Another is based on the record of annual snowfall held by the permanent ice sheets. Ice core layers can be counted, and trapped air samples analysed. This method shows that the level of carbon dioxide today is 35% greater than it has been for over 850,000 years, and radioactivity and chemical composition measurements show this is due to the use of fossil fuels, cement production and the burning of forests.
