Ideal Home book, 1956
The Daily Mail newspaper organised the first Ideal Home Exhibition in 1908. These have continued to be held annually (war years excepted) ever since. In the 1950s the exhibition gave a platform for the new design principles that were now current.
In the 1956 exhibition visitors were treated to the sight of the ‘House of the Future’ complete with loud-speaking telephone, microwave oven, waste disposal unit and a shower that both washed and dried.
[edit] Memories
My first cooker was a Parkinson Cowan in white enamel. At that time the craze was for kitchens to be red and white, so I followed the trend. I wanted the front of the cooker panel to be red, not white, as it was sold to me. When the man came to change the panel he tried his hardest to get me to change my mind and keep the white panel, but I insisted.
