This motor bicycle is an early example of one of the first and most important designs produced in the USA. Designed by Oscar Hedstrom, who was responsible for the prototype Indian motorcycle in 1901, it was manufactured by George M Hendee in his cycle factory at Springfield, Massachusetts. Within a few years, Indian motorcycles were in large production - more than 30,000 were made in 1913 - and in wide use in many parts of the world.
