In 1753, Joseph Black discovered carbon dioxide. The gas was given off when he treated limestone (calcium carbonate) and 'magnesia alba' (magnesium carbonate) with acids. He called it 'fixed air', and later found it is present in the atmosphere, and in air exhaled by humans.
