Kenwood A100 Turnover toaster, c.1948-1957

The first Kenwood product. Ken Wood formed his own company in Woking in 1948, after previously working in partnership. The toaster grilled one side of the slice at a time – opening the door outwards flips the slice to toast the other side.

[edit] How it works

Nichrome wire wound on to a vertical insulating board provides heat when electricity flows through it, to toast the bread.

[edit] Memories

Our first toaster! My wife’s grandmother gave us one of these (or something similar) circa 1980.

— Peter Elliott

We moved into a new house in 1970 and this toaster was one of the new things my Dad got for the 'neew house'. But strangely enough we rarely used it because my Dad didn't want to anyone to break it - rather defeated the object of buying it really but it seemed totally normal at the time. I remember it made great toast but you had to waatch it all the time because it was totally manual - before that we used to sit in frront of the gas fire with bread on a long fork!
