The first tanker converted to carry liquid petroleum gas brought supplies from the Gulf of Mexico to Canvey Island, Essex, from 1959. The load was 600 times the amount of unliquefied gas, and established a new way of transferring fuel around the world.

Inv. No: 1965-290
The vessel was formerly known as the "Marlin Hitch" an American built vessel for the 2nd World War, it was an armed merchant man used for the transport of war machinery i.e. tanks. I served on the vessel in 1965 as 4th Engineer when it was managed my Stephenson Clarke Shipping Ltd. We traded between Houston - Buenos Aires - Port de Bouke (France). She was very slow and its top speed was 10.5 knots, it was a very hot ship with small cabins and no air conditioning. She only ever carried 1 cargo of methane(LNG) the rest of the time she carriel LPG.
I was a cabin boy on this ship in 1965 along with hayden bell, andy (jock) cruikshank, and captain soulsby, harry the third mate, paddy macmillon and many more, i would love to hear from anyone with memories of that year.Ialso remember that there was no air conditioning.I am pretty sure she was built in philadelphia USA i cant remember the date when she was built.I also recall that the engineers were mostly from the newcastle area and that they could drink any man on the ship under the table (except for the cook.)WOW what times?
