The midget disc recorder was designed by the BBC in 1943-4 in collaboration with the MSS company, which had pioneered direct-disc recording in the 1930s. It was recognised that war reporters would need a truly portable machine to keep up with the fast-moving Allied forces in the months after D-Day. The recorder was simple to operate, with a neon lamp which flashed if the correct recording level was exceeded. Another lamp showed when only fifteen seconds or so remained before the cutter head was automatically tripped at the end of the side.
