Between 1879 and 1886, over 200 lamps were examined by the Royal Commission on Accidents in Mines, and they form a reserve collection within the Museum's holdings. The report commented on the insecurity of the Davy and Stephenson lamps unless enclosed in a glass shield – many of the lamps tested failed in explosive air currents of over 1000 feet per minute. In glazed lamps the danger of the glass breaking was ever present, and the amount of light they gave was poor.
