Miner's "Mk.1, Safety Helmet", from Kibblesworth, a pit in the North East of England. Although a standard pattern was issued to the miners, they were allowed to customise them if they wished as long as it did not interfere with their safety. The owner of this one trimmed the peak above the eyes to a more fashionable shape.
