Morphy-Richards Electric Hairdryer, Model HDA2, 1960

The first hairdryer to feature a double switch arrangement allowing hot or cold air to be blown. It has a motor which was claimed to be silent in operation and did not interfere with radio or television sets, incidentally showing how ubiquitous these other items had become.

[edit] How it works

The heating element is in front of a fan connected to an electric motor. This causes hot air to be blown out of the end of the dryer, which can be used to evaporate water on the hair.

[edit] Memories

Yes I have one unused still in its box. Is it a collectors item? Any idea how much it is worth?

anon

My grandma had one of these and I remember using it on family holidays to the Gower during the 1970s / 80s. It was very powerful and blew the sea water and sand out of my hair.

This brought back memories of my old home in Leeds, West Yorkshire and especially the bathroom! We had one - it was really noisy and worked well at "frying" your hair.

My grandmother also had one of these. It was still going in the 1980s, possibly even the 90s. The hot option always seemed way too intense, more like a fan heater than a hair dryer. I quickly learned the technique of deftly switching between hot and cold modes to dry my hair without burning my scalp. Well built though.

— Robert Smith

Yeah I remember it. It was rubbish (Well compared to what we have today). Toodaloo.
