Night clock made by Joseph Knibb, c.1680.

[edit] How it works

Clocks of this type contain an oil lamp which illuminates the dial so that the time can be read at night. However they proved to be a fire hazard and were phased out when the repeating mechanism was introduced. The repeating mechanism enabled the previous hour, and sometimes also the quarter hours, to be struck by a pulling cord attached to the clock, as in the adjacent example by George Graham.
