In 1827, Jean-Baptiste Fourier had suggested that an atmospheric phenomenon existed that kept the Earth warmer than it would otherwise be, as if it were a ‘greenhouse’. Svante Arrhenius suggested in 1896 that carbon dioxide emissions from the burning of coal would enhance the Earth's greenhouse effect and lead to global warming. He spent several years of laborious hand calculation to derive a value for the climate sensitivity – the global mean temperature increase for a carbon dioxide doubling. His value of 2 °C is close to the modern value, but he thought doubling the carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere would take a thousand years. In practice, it is likely to happen this century.
