Valdemar Poulsen invented the wire recorder in 1898. He intended it for dictation and for telephone messages. This machine is a development of the basic idea. The record was made on a steel wire unwinding from a spool. The wire passed through an assembly with a hinged lid containing a recording and an erasing head. It was driven by an electric motor and gave about 20 minutes playing time.
