The Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE), Farnborough, led British aerospace research in this period. Several thousand Government engineers and scientists worked there, perpetuating a ‘boffin culture’ that had grown under the pressure of urgent wartime research. This sign typifies the wry humour that distinguished this highly able group.
