Barometers measure air pressure, in units that show how tall a column of liquid can be supoorted under a vaccuum. Demonstrated by Torricelli in 17th century Itlay, the barometer became a must-have accessory for the gentlemen of the period, and was decorated to serve as the ornate piece of library furniture it usually was. With care, they can last a long time. This example has been conserved and re-gilded, and is still in working order.
