The original phonograph – the first machine which would record and reproduce sound by mechanical means – was made by Thomas Edison in 1877 and brought to the Science Museum three years later. It remained here until 1928 when, at Edison’s request, it was returned to him. This is an exact copy, made in Edison’s laboratory at Orange, New Jersey, in 1931.
