Replica of Newton’s Telescope
Manufacturer F.L. Agate
Production years 1924 (original, 1668)

The first successful reflecting telescope was made by Isaac Newton in 1668. He made a slightly modified version for demonstration to the Royal Society in 1671. This replica was made for the Science Museum in 1924 by F.L. Agate.

Reflecting telescopes were first suggested by James Gregory in 1663, but Newton was the first to construct one. Newton’s reflecting telescope had the advantage over traditional refractors in that it did not have chromatic aberration (different colours are focused to different points), since mirrors reflect all light at the same angles.
