Royal Aircraft Establishment flying suit, Model 4, 1956

This all-in-one pressure suit was designed at Farnborough for crew flying the RAF’s V-bomber aircraft. The V-bombers were intended to fly at altitudes over 50,000 feet, close to the speed of sound. Sustaining life in this environment set scientists and engineers major new challenges.

[edit] How it works

At high altitude the Earth’s atmosphere is thin and lacking in oxygen. This suit provides a sealed environment which can help keep the pilot alive by providing levels of oxygen and pressure which mimic life at the Earth’s surface.
