This is a typical British example of a heavy motorcycle of the period 1912 to 1925 designed for use with a sidecar. A machine of this kind, fitted with a commodious sidecar, was capable of, and frequently used for, carrying three or even four persons on long tours, and was consequently generally regarded as an economical family transport. About fifty miles could be travelled on a gallon of petrol and speeds up to 55 mph could be attained.
