This automatic electric coffee percolator was the first Russell Hobbs appliance. It features a bimetallic strip temperature control, coffee strength adjustment and a primrose ceramic jug – other colours became available later.

The heating element heats water which this flows over ground coffee as it is forced through a pipe due to the pressure of boiling. When the coffee is made the bimetalic strip turns the machine off.

We had 3 for wedding presents in 1964.One was yellow, one was blue and the other had a pattern on and came with jug and basin to match.We had them for years and used them always.I have always used a percolator,they make the best coffee.

I wasn't around when this was invented, but I don't think the exhibit description of the colour is correct. Unless the company's scientists had also also been working on genetically-engineered pale green primroses...
