Bituminous shales can be excavated, distilled and further processed to yield something like 25 gallons of oil to a ton of shale. Huge new workings are being opened up in Canada, to the dismay of environmentalists. A barrel of oil delivers the same amount of energy as 3500 very fit cyclists pedalling full tilt for an hour.
