A silver plated coffee pot from a London & North Eastern Railway Hotel or Restaurant. The coffee pot would have been used between 1923 and 1948 when the railways were nationalised under British Railways.
Britain's main railway companies operated dining services, steam packet services, restaurants and hotels, using their own monogrammed serving ware, cutlery and plateware. This coffee pot is on display in the National Railway Museum's 'Warehouse' along with NRM's superb collection of railway company silver plate serving ware.
[edit] Memories
Happy memories - I was served coffee from this pot between August 1978 and December 1985 during my spell as General Manager of the Eastern Region of British Railways with my office in the North Eastern Railway HQ building in York. I became very attached to the coffee pot and when I retired bought it officially from my stores controller.
What he and I had forgotten was that it didn't really belong to British Railways.
When I came to York in 1978 the furnishings I inherited in my office didn't do justice to that magnificent building - very modern - all black ash and chrome - So I persuaded John Coiley to let me 'borrow' from the museum store some NER and LNER artefacts more appropriate to the room. All properly documented of course. But after 8 years I had forgotten their provenance and of corse had to hand it back to the NRM. My very embarassed stores controller did however unearth an LNER Coffee pot which still belonged to BR and I'm the proud owner and regular user of a genuine piece of railway silver plate.
