‘The Quickest Way between Two Points’, Southern Railway poster, 1931 Poster, Southern Electric - A straight line Home, by Pat Keely, 1931, ref. AD 1468 1/1931. Format: double royal. Dimensions: 40 x 25 inches, 1016 x 635mm.
Robert Peel claimed the railways made it possible for the poor to move about. One of the most effective forms of mass transport of people and goods, rail has a relatively small carbon footprint per passenger compared to other modes.
When they were deciding how to electrify the line, the choice was either an overhead wire or a third rail. The story goes that they consulted the previous few years of weather records, but unknowingly picked a short rather warm period. This resulted in the wrong decision for the cooler weather that followed.
