This coloured engraving shows ‘Stjerneborg’, the second observatory of the famous Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe. Constructed in 1581 on the island of Hven, now part of Sweden, it was used by him to map the stars to a much greater accuracy than his predecessors.
[edit] How it works
Without the advantages of the telescope, Tycho's measuring instruments used naked-eye sights. Part of his observatory was located underground to provide a more stable base for his massive precision observing equipment, such as quadrants, sextants and armillary instruments.
